COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region

"For more than 40 years, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has been dedicated to ensuring everyone in our community has access to nourishing food. In the past year alone, we’ve distributed 9.6 million pounds of foodβ€”helping to ensure people have the food they need, when they need it most. And with the support of our generous community, we’ll keep working toward a future where no one goes hungry."

Especially around this time of year, the Food Bank does such a great job of bringing resources together to help out those in need. There's many ways you can get involved and even small contributions make a difference.

Tap here to see how you can help. And you can also check out their 'most needed items' on this page if helpful.

FOOD & DRINK IN THE REGION

Darlise Cafe | 33 Queen Street South, Kitchener

I came across a conversation lately where someone had asked "What's the best eggs benny in town?" - and the overwhelming answer was the Darlise Cafe.

Located in downtown Kitchener and run by a husband/wife duo - their main goal is delivering 'fresh' food. Fresh ingredients for all their recipes, and they try to make everything from scratch... baking all their pastries, muffins and more each morning.

Something interesting I read too - 'Chef Darryl' always has one or two apprentices from the local high schools or colleges working - as training the next generation of chefs is very important to him. A great initiative and way to support the community.

Let's hear what Jordan has to say in her 5 star google review a couple months ago:

"Great food! Good variety on the menu but not so big that it’s overwhelming. Fairly priced for good homemade quality.
We had an eggs Benedict special, breakfast burrito, and eggs and bacon. Ask for their homemade hot sauce! It’s πŸ₯΅πŸ”₯πŸ”₯. We went Sunday afternoon and didn’t have to wait for a table. It’s fairly big inside."

You can check out this week's specials here. And also their Benedict, Pancake & Crepe menu (if you click on the top left hand corner you can see their other menus as well)

* this is not a sponsored placement, just a recommendation i've seen come up a lot. ads will always be made obvious if so.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Reader! - What's your favourite event, tradition or 'must do' each holiday season? πŸŽ„

Reply with your answer and I'll share some responses next week!

RANDOM FACTS OF THE DAY

Trees have their own internet. Trees can communicate and share nutrients with one another through an underground network of fungi called mycorrhiza. Scientists have nicknamed this the "Wood Wide Web." * highly recommend the book 'The Hidden Life of Trees' - a fascinating read

You are taller in the morning. Because gravity compresses the cartilage in your spine throughout the day, you are about 1 cm taller when you wake up than when you go to bed.

Sharks are older than trees. Sharks have existed for about 400 million years, whereas the earliest trees appeared around 350 million years ago. Sharks also predate the rings of Saturn. * I can't wrap my head around this?! so cool.

THANK YOU!
