🐝 Team Canada is coming to the Aud

October 27th, 2025

Good Afternoon, Waterloo Region!

It's the last week of October (where has this year gone?!) and you can start to feel the seasons turning.

The region looks so nice around this time of year and one of my favourite things to do is drive around the rural parts of where we live and see all the colourful fall leaves. Very cathartic. Plus... you can pick up tons of goodies in the road-side stands.

In today's email:

  • fun local events this week
  • World Juniors coming to the Aud
  • a 'smokey' restaurant recommendation
  • how many lego mini-figures there are in the world
  • & more

There's a lot of new faces here since the last newsletter on Thursday... so welcome!

And for those of you who've been around for a bit, you know the deal...

Let's dive in πŸ‘‡

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Rocky Horror Picture Show

The epic film comes to Centre in the Square! Wednesday, December 17th | 7pm

"50th anniversary screening of the original unedited movie with a live shadow cast and audience participation! Every ticket purchased includes one bag of Rocky Horror props for audience participation throughout the event."

Sounds fun! More details and ticket info here.

Now.. tickets for this are a touch pricey.. so if you're interested in watching the movie somewhere, Princess Cinemas (a great venue) also has a number of screenings over the next week.

Tequila + Tacos + A Mariachi Band = an amazing time

Another one I'm keeping from the last newsletter since it was so popular!

Tequila Expo - tequila, tacos, beer, lucha libre wrestling, a mariachi band and "more" - I'm not really sure how much "more" you need, this sounds absolutely incredible | Saturday, November 8th | 4-11pm | Bingemans Conference Centre, Kitchener

World-Class Junior Hockey Comes To Kitchener

Canada vs Sweden | Wednesday, December 17th | 7pm

On Wednesday, December 17th, The Kitchener Auditorium will host a pre-competition game ahead of the World Juniors tournament starting later in the month. A great opportunity to see Team Canada in action and some high-level hockey.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, and you can find more info here.

Halloween At A Local Brewery

Four Fathers Brewing Co. in Cambridge has some great Halloween-themed events lined up for this week, and some look to be quite kid friendly as well. A candy pairing session, trivia night, scary movie night and pumpkin carving... there's something for everyone. You can check it all out on their event page.

Under His Eye: The Gilead Experience

The City of Cambridge is hosting a self-guided walking tour and exhibition themed around the hit TV show filmed there: of The Handmaid's Tale

It runs from now until November 6th. Details can be found here, and it's completely free.

You can also check out this cool interactive online map if you can't make it.

Trick or Treat Trail

Hosted at The Gaslight District in Cambridge, they've set up a 'trail' of 7 locations you can go around to get treats and a stamp. Once you've collected all 7 stamps, you can turn those in for a Halloween goodie bag.

There's also two movies on show afterwards - Hocus Pocus + Ghostbusters... plus they've got the Jays game on a big screen.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

WRGive - I've highlighted this one a few times before, but just wanted to remind anyone interested in donating that the deadline to do so is Wednesday, October 29th. A superb initiative from the Waterloo Region Community Foundation, where they've identified 8 meaningful and community-driven projects that bring value to the area and the people that live here.

FOOD & DRINK IN THE REGION

Lancaster Smokehouse

They might be a bit more well known around the community than the last two restaurant features... but the Lancaster Smokehouse is in a league of their own.

I mean... just look at that picture. Perfection 🀌

"Always Unique, Always innovative, local and fresh."

One of the best places around to get that authentic Southern hospitality through delicious food. There's a wide variety of things to choose from including chicken, sandwiches, ribs, wings, briskets & more. Plus the sides are amazing.

They've got a restaurant on Lancaster street in Kitchener, and they've also got a very robust takeout and catering system. We had it a few years ago at a family gathering and they were superb all around... from the service to the food.

And as always, don't just take my word. Here's a raving, 5 star google review from Megan a few months ago:

"3rd time here and loved it. The fried chicken is my favourite. This time around we had Jon as our waiter and he was awesome. He answered all our questions and went above and beyond to make my belated birthday lunch with my girls extra special. Buy some of the pork rub. It's delicious on everything! Even would be delicious on popcorn! Can't wait to come back."

The only thing is parking can be a touch tricky, so seeing a lot of people recommend making a reservation, and showing up a bit early to make sure you're not worrying or in a rush.

You can check out their menu here - you won't be disappointed!

* this is not a sponsored placement, just a favourite of mine. ads will always be made obvious if so.

RANDOM FACTS OF THE DAY

Hot water freezes faster than cold water. This counter-intuitive phenomenon is known as the Mpemba effect, named after a Tanzanian student who observed the effect in the 1960s. Scientists still debate the exact reasons why, but theories include evaporation, convection, or the impact of dissolved gases.

The "happiest" colour in the world is yellow. Studies on colour psychology have found that yellow is most often associated with happiness, optimism, sunshine, and warmth across different cultures.

There are more LEGO mini-figures than there are people on Earth. As of a few years ago, the number of LEGO mini-figures produced was in the billions, significantly outnumbering the global human population.

THANK YOU!

Hope you have an awesome day & the week kicks off well for you.

See you Thursday 🐝

April 2nd, 2026 Good Afternoon, Waterloo Region! Did anyone see the rocket launch going to the moon yesterday?! Exciting that we're going back there. This mission takes 4 astronauts on a 10 day journey where they'll fly around the moon and back. In the next year or two, the plan is to run two more missions - one where they'll connect with a lander in outer space, and the second where they'll actually land on the moon. And in a local twist, Jeremy Hansen from London, Ontario is one of the four...

And if you don't... well, that's fine too - because there's lots of great stuff going on this week! Plus our local sports teams are getting right into 'playoff season' which is always exciting. March 26th, 2026 Good Afternoon, Waterloo Region! So for those that clicked through onto the 'upcoming events' site on Monday, thanks so much & appreciate the feedback. Since I can't reliably get the full list into the email each week, it's now going to live under 'Upcoming Events' in the 'What's Happening' section - this'll actually be a good thing, giving you easy access each time the newsletter's sent. I'll also put a 'new' badge on anything that was recently added. For example, there's a...
